How do I know if I’m on the best electricity deal?

The easiest way to find out is to use the savings calculator at which shows you how much you could save by switching power companies.

How do I complete a switch?

Consumer NZ's Powerswitch website also enables you to view details of the different suppliers and their prices, and choose the best retailer for your needs.

Once you've decided on the best power company and plan, you can start the switching process while you're still on the Consumer Powerswitch site.

Your new power company will then arrange the transfer for you. It’s usually free to switch.

On average, it takes just 3–4 days for the switch to take place.

What if I want to switch and I’m on a fixed term contract with my current retailer?

Some retailers include a “break fee” in their fixed term contracts. The break fee applies if you terminate the contract (by switching) before the fixed term ends.

If you are on a fixed term contract with your current retailer, make sure you check the terms and conditions of that contract before you switch.

If your fixed term contract includes a break fee, you can always talk to your retailer about how that fee applies, or if they can offer you a better deal.

What makes up my power bill?
Your power bill includes information about how much power you have used and how much you need to pay for each component.
Where does my power come from?
A lot goes on behind the scenes in the electricity market to ensure the lights stay on.
