Consumers don't need to check the status of their electricity meters as the responsibility for meter certification sits with the company who has provided the equipment.

If your meter has not yet been recertified and is inside your property, you will be contacted by your retailer to arrange access for one of their technicians to complete the recertification. Remember to ask for identification before giving access.

Certification is a process that checks the meter works accurately. Just because a metering installation may not be certified does not mean it is inaccurate, although generally after 15 years the accuracy of meters can start to drift outside the permissible tolerance.

If you have any concerns about your meter’s certification or how it is operating, please discuss this with your electricity retailer.

What does the Authority do?

After 1 April 2015, the Authority will begin auditing compliance of the meter companies and non-compliance issues will be dealt with.
